OK what’s up with the Part 2 ?

Seems not all us Texans remember Oilfield Trash Part 1. For me it was in the Early 60′s thru mid Seventies. My dad had a Contract with Sun Oil Company to Build Oilfield locations, roads, mud pits ect. He handled his new found fortune by staying Drunk, divorce my mom, rolling over more than one new pickup. One time he went to Dallas and paid Cash for a 1965 TD15 Bulldozer, as he hauled it back he stopped at Whiskey flats, bought a fifth of whiskey, drank the whole bottle and then rolled Truck, Trailer,& Dozer off the Paluxy River bridge . No one knows how he survived. But he did and contunied to ruin my family chances to profit from the oil boom in Hood and Somervell counties. I’m not feelin sorry for myself. This is one of thousands such stories from Longview to Pecos. The Lord has given us a second chance, My plan is to profit in every possible way from the Barnett Shale. Invest in things not totally linked to the Energy Business. For example My Dinersarus Truck Stop @ Glen Rose. And several other enterprises. As for new pickups I was drivin one of those Back when Barnett Shale was seaweed.

Wow OFT you have lived quite a life , I guess you pretty well know the whole story about Glen Rose rise from a sleepy little town to the current “groggy and waking up town “that it has become. Did you go to Glen Rose high or did you have to go to Stephenville? Just wondering, My mother is from Comanche so we always drove through Glen Rose on our way there, Once when I was a kid we were driving up Chalk Mt. and a Mountain lion ran out in front of our Ford rambler, honest to God.You ever see anything like that around there?

I am a product of Glen Rose High 1973 top 22 in my class of 23. And yes there are mountain Lions still at Chalk Mtn. We hear them from time to time and will scare the shit out of you. A friend of mine said I was wrong what I been hearing is a big Bobcat. He came out one night to have a tottie and the sound made his hair stand up on his neck. He looked at me and said “Hey that sounds like a Mountain Lion” no shit Sherlock. We also have found Coyotes dead and tore all to pieces. Welcome to Chalk Mtn.

Hi from Spikette in Dallas (the better half). This is Carolyn – you met me briefly at M&K – Friday night all you can eat catfish — I am relatively new to Glen Rose. I was born in Austin and went to high school in New Braunfels. I love Glen Rose because it reminds me of the beauty and rugged hills of New Braunfels but less discovered. Let’s hope the gas wells come in so we can all live in Glen Rose and enjoy the good life. You’ll want to visit Gruene Hall – email us – my dad lives a block away and we’ll meet you there.

A little history for the newbies: OFTP1 was from late 1973 (Arab Oil Embargo) through February of 1982, when it all came crashing down like an avalanche.
I was there, and it was something to behold.
Gold nugget watchbands, Urban Cowboy deluxe, company stickers on hardhats, drugs, partying like never before or since, billions of dollars flowing into the field to drill worthless crap prospects, 200 geology majors graduating per year down at UT (my alumni), and Petroleum Engineering classes filled wall to wall.
When I moved to Giddings to do wellsite work in 1978, there were only 6 active working rigs for the entire Austin Chalk trend, over 5 counties, and I was almost the first guy out there. When I moved back out to West Texas in 1980, there were over 120. The skies were lit up like Times Square around Dime Box. Now THAT was a friggin’ boom!
We were hated by the townspeople (‘goddam oilfield trash’), and we came in from the field at 7 AM and bought 6-packs, so we could go to sleep.
Our “beer league” softball team in Giddings, by the way, was called “Oilfield Trash”, and we had “OFT” caps; it was sort of a “screw you” to the local bohunks.
The town doctor was brave enough to be our first baseman, since the rest of the town hated our guts. The problem was, Doc had to run out all the time to deliver babies or save someone’s life. What a lousy set of priorities!
The game ended whenever a team was too drunk to take the field. We were rolling in money (and a lot of other wonderful things)
Yes, what a wonderful boom that was…

Oh yes, the Rolexes.. I forgot the Rolexes.
And JR Ewing, and the Rolls Royce dealership in Midland, folks bottoming out their new ‘Vettes on cattleguards and all that.
Anyway, I’m drilling and exploring and finding lots of oil now in the Permian Basin, and this is a lot more reasonable boomlet.
It actually feels better now.
